What happens to our skin and how we can support it

Aging is a natural and beautiful part of life — but that doesn’t mean we can’t support our skin and confidence along the way.
As we age, one of the primary shifts that affects our appearance is a decline in estrogen levels. This hormonal change contributes to a loss of subcutaneous fat, a decrease in bone density, and a reduction in fibroblast activity — the cells responsible for producing collagen and elastin. Together, these changes lead to a gradual loss of volume, structure, and skin elasticity — and it’s this combination that causes the skin to appear looser or begin to “fall.”
A Decade-by-Decade Breakdown of Facial Aging:
In our 20s, we begin to lose cheek fat — often the earliest, most subtle sign of facial aging.
By our 30s, dynamic wrinkles like crow’s feet and deepening nasolabial folds (the lines running from your nose to the corners of your mouth) start to become more noticeable.
In our 40s, we typically see hollowing in the temples, contributing to an overall more tired or aged appearance.
In our 50s and beyond, marionette lines (lines extending downward from the corners of the mouth) often appear or deepen due to continued volume loss and skin laxity.
While some aspects of aging are inevitable, several risk factors can accelerate the process — including poor diet, smoking, and sun exposure. Minimizing these habits can go a long way in preserving healthy, youthful skin.
So, what can we do to support our skin?
SPF is non-negotiable — daily protection from the sun’s rays is your best defense. Topical skincare — products containing hyaluronic acid, peptides, and antioxidants help nourish and hydrate the skin barrier. Lifestyle support — staying hydrated, eating nutrient-dense foods, and prioritizing sleep all promote long-term skin health. Wellness treatments and aesthetic support — from vitamin injections and tinted sunscreens to neurotoxins and dermal fillers, there are incredible tools available to help restore what’s been lost, soften signs of aging, and keep you looking like you — just a little more refreshed.
